ISLAMABAD: The women of Afghanistan have been awarded the prestigious 2026 Chatham House Prize in recognition of their extraordinary courage and resilience in resisting what the British foreign policy institute describes as systematic gender persecution under Taliban rule.

Announcing the award, Chatham House said Afghan women were selected for embodying “the determination of a broader movement for women’s rights' despite years of escalating restrictions imposed since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021."

The prize will be presented later this year during a special ceremony in London, along with a commemorative scroll signed by King Charles III, patron of the Royal Institute of International Affairs.

Recognition for a nationwide women’s movement

“Rather than honoring an individual, the 2026 prize recognizes millions of Afghan women who have continued to resist Taliban policies through protests, underground education initiatives, journalism, advocacy and community organizing,” said a statement from Chatham House.

Chatham House said that the award acknowledges women who have “refused to be erased from public life” despite systematic efforts to silence them.

The institute praised their courage in confronting persecution while continuing to campaign for fundamental rights and freedoms.

Taliban restrictions described as gender persecution

Afghan media outlets welcomed the announcement, saying that it shines an international spotlight on what many activists call gender apartheid.

Kabul Now reported that the award comes after five years of increasingly harsh Taliban policies that have stripped women and girls of basic rights, including access to secondary schools, universities, many professions and numerous public spaces.

The publication said, “Afghan women continue to resist despite arrests, intimidation and exile.”

Afghanistan International described the recognition as a tribute to women who have faced imprisonment, torture and forced disappearances for participating in peaceful demonstrations against Taliban rule.

It said, “Many activists continue their struggle from exile while others operate secretly inside Afghanistan.”

Global attention returns to Afghanistan’s women

The award coincides with growing international concern over the Taliban’s treatment of women and girls.

According to the United Nations, the Taliban have issued more than 100 decrees restricting nearly every aspect of women’s lives, including education, employment, healthcare, movement and access to justice. UN officials describe Afghanistan as facing the world’s most severe women’s rights crisis.

According to the British news agency Reuters, international human rights experts have increasingly characterized Taliban policies as systematic gender persecution, while the International Criminal Court has sought arrest warrants for senior Taliban leaders over alleged crimes against humanity related to the persecution of women.

Women continue resisting despite arrests and exile

Despite widespread repression, Afghan women have continued organizing street protests, operating underground schools, running women-led media outlets and advocating internationally for the restoration of their rights.

Many activists have been detained, tortured or forced into exile, but women’s organizations continue documenting abuses and providing education and support networks inside Afghanistan.

Symbolic victory amid continuing repression

The Chatham House Prize is regarded as one of the United Kingdom’s leading international affairs awards, previously honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to improving international relations.

This year’s decision sends a powerful message that Afghan women’s resistance remains central to the global human rights agenda, even as the Taliban seek greater international engagement without reversing restrictions on women and girls.

For millions of Afghan women, the award represents international recognition of a struggle that continues every day under Taliban rule.
