BEIJING: China imposed export controls on 10 US companies involved in defense and rare earths mining in response to Washington&#39;s blacklist of Chinese firms, Beijing said Monday. The move comes a month after US President Donald Trump visited Beijing, seeking to stabilise fraught relations during talks with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. Although the countries agreed to work towards reducing tariffs, ties have since been tested as both sides stunt the other in tech and defense. Washington released a new blacklist this month of 80 companies and their subsidiaries it said were aiding the Chinese military. That saw tech giants Alibaba and Baidu added, as well as electric vehicle giant BYD, prompting Beijing to threaten retaliation. China&#39;s new export controls come &quot;in response to the US government&#39;s egregious act of adding to its so-called &#39;Chinese military enterprise list&#39;&quot;, the commerce ministry said in a statement, adding the move was also to &quot;safeguard national security.&quot; The 10 entities include Aveox, which holds aerospace defense contracts with the US military, and Oshkosh Defense, which produces military vehicle fleets. It also lists US rare earths producers MP Materials and USA Rare Earth. Exporters are prohibited from providing dual-use items to the listed entities, China&#39;s commerce ministry said, adding that &quot;any relevant export activities currently underway must cease immediately.&quot; The ban also applies to &quot;organisations or individuals in any country or region... transferring or providing dual-use items originating in China to said entities,&quot; it said. China&#39;s finance ministry simultaneously announced a ban on agencies involved in public procurement from buying products made by 46 US firms, including Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Boeing&#39;s defense division. Also listed were divisions of General Dynamics and Anduril Industries, which are major US military contractors, and several aerospace firms. Companies with US investments operating in China are excluded, according to a statement from the finance ministry, which said measures would take effect from Monday. China&#39;s commerce ministry had already sanctioned a number of those firms and their subsidiaries, both in 2024 and 2025, over US arms sales to Taiwan. Taipei relies heavily on Washington&#39;s support to counter growing pressure from Beijing, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out seizing it by force. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this month a proposed US$14 billion arms package to Taiwan was &quot;under review&quot;. Since he met with Xi in May, Trump has sought to publicly present an image of strong bilateral ties. Trump thanked the Chinese leader at the G7 conference in France last week for staying &quot;neutral&quot; in the United States&#39; conflict with Iran, as the countries adopted an initial ceasefire.

WASHINGTON: The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said Friday it has detected a second case of a dangerous livestock pest whose flesh-eating larvae can kill cattle. The new incidence of so-called New World screwworm (NWS) was detected in a calf in south Texas about 5.5 miles (10 km) from the first one, which was reported on Thursday, the department said on X. The outbreak has triggered a race to keep the pest from spreading. The NWS fly was thought to be eradicated in the United States in 1966. But Florida experienced an outbreak in 2016 that primarily impacted deer and was eliminated the following year, according to the department. The fly has remained present in South America and, in recent years, has moved northward. The first of these new cases, detected near the border with Mexico, has raised alarm among ranchers, particularly those who raise cattle. The flies lay their eggs in open wounds or mucous membranes of warm-blooded animals, where they hatch into larvae and feed on flesh. Left untreated, the infestation can be deadly, and the parasites can quickly spread. The pest can also affect wild animals, pets, and even people. Texas has established a 12-mile (20-kilometer) quarantine zone, meaning all warm-blooded animals, including pets, must be inspected before leaving the zone. The fly had been eradicated in the US thanks in large part to dropping millions of sterile flies to mate with wild females. US officials said some four million sterile flies are now being released weekly from the sky, and that some four million more in the pupae stage were being deployed in ground release chambers. A USDA study last year estimated a screwworm resurgence in Texas could cost the state&#39;s economy $1.8 billion.

State broadcaster CCTV said that Xi would visit from June 8 to 9 at the invitation of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, his first trip to Pyongyang in seven years. Beijing is a vital source of political and economic support to North Korea, which is one of the most diplomatically isolated countries in the world and under heavy international sanctions. The upcoming meeting will be Xi&#39;s first official trip abroad this year, and comes after he hosted back-to-back summits with US President Donald Trump and Russia&#39;s Vladimir Putin last month. &quot;China is meeting leaders from around the world, coordinating positions and playing a mediating role,&quot; Lim Eul-chul, a North Korea expert at South Korea&#39;s Kyungnam University, told AFP. &quot;As China&#39;s international standing rises, Beijing is likely seeking to draw Pyongyang more actively into its diplomatic orbit as a partner in advancing a more multilateral order.&quot; Pyongyang depends on China for up to 95% of total trade and 85% of its exports, according to 2022 statistics from the National Committee on North Korea, a Washington-based think tank. WASHINGTON: The US Trade Representative on Tuesday proposed new duties targeting 60 economies for alleged failures to act against forced labor, as the Trump administration seeks to rebuild its tariff agenda after legal setbacks. The proposed tariffs range from 10% to 12.5%, according to a government filing, and they will undergo a public comment period before a final decision is made. The move comes months after Washington launched investigations into trading partners, including China, the European Union, and Japan. The probes looked into whether they took action against the import of goods made with forced labor, and if this impacted US commerce. On Tuesday, the USTR said that 54 of the economies &quot;failed to impose and effectively enforce a forced labor import prohibition.&quot; This group includes China, Vietnam, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. &quot;The failure of our most important trading partners to address the importation of goods made with forced labor is unacceptable,&quot; USTR Jamieson Greer said in a statement. &quot;This creates a dynamic where American workers are forced to compete globally on an unlevel playing field,&quot; he added. But the proposed tariffs come with various exemptions, such as beef, coffee, and certain fruits and nuts. Goods from Canada and Mexico that comply with a North American free trade pact will also be exempt -- as will certain textiles and apparel. The public is invited to provide written comments by July 6, and the USTR will subsequently hold hearings. After the Supreme Court struck down a swath of President Donald Trump&#39;s tariffs in February, US officials launched the new trade probes as steps toward imposing more lasting duties. Apart from the investigations on forced labor, the US trade envoy also started probes into excess industrial capacity.
