ISLAMABAD: England and Pakistan head into the opening Test at Headingley on Wednesday seeking to turn the page after months of uncertainty, with both sides undergoing major changes and struggling for consistency.

The three-match series comes as a contest between the seventh- and eighth-placed teams in the World Test Championship standings, but the backdrop of leadership changes, coaching upheaval and poor recent results gives the encounter added significance.

England have won only two of their last 10 Tests and have not won a Test series since late 2024. Their latest campaign ended in a 3-0 home defeat to New Zealand, their first home series loss in three Tests since 2012.

Pakistan have also won just two of their last seven Tests and have not won a Test series since defeating England in 2024. Their last Test series victory in England came in 1996.

England's preparations have been marked by the retirement of captain Ben Stokes and the departure of head coach Brendon McCullum, while Joe Root has returned to the captaincy on an interim basis for the series. Former Australia coach Stephen Fleming is set to take charge later.

Pakistan have experienced even greater turnover, with five different coaches overseeing the Test side since the 2023-24 season. Shan Masood was recently replaced as captain by Babar Azam, but Babar's hand injury has ruled him out of the opening Test, leaving Salman Ali Agha to lead the side for the first time in Tests.

Despite their troubles, Pakistan see an opportunity in conditions that have traditionally suited their bowlers. Veteran seamer Mohammad Abbas could be particularly influential if the Headingley surface offers movement under cloudy conditions.

Pakistan also received confidence from their seven-wicket victory over a Pakistan warm-up side in Beckenham, where key batters Saud Shakeel and Shan Masood struck centuries.

England, meanwhile, will look to Joe Root and Harry Brook to provide stability in the batting lineup, while Jordan Cox is expected to take the No. 3 position and Dan Lawrence return as a spin-bowling all-rounder.

Headingley has traditionally favored England, who have won their last six Tests at the venue. Pakistan's task is further complicated by their long wait for a Test series victory in England.

Yet with both teams seeking a fresh start, the Headingley opener could prove less a battle between established contenders and more a chance for two troubled sides to rebuild their Test identities.
