DHAKA: Bangladesh is battling a heatwave and frequent power cuts, as soaring electricity demand outstrips limited generation capacity constrained by shortages linked to the Middle East war. Temperatures have hit 40C across a swathe of the country of 170 million people, forcing the government to impose load-shedding as demand exceeds supply. &quot;Neither my children nor I could sleep last night due to frequent power cuts. It was extremely hot,&quot; Mashuka Yasmin Mishu, a 35-year-old mother of two from northwestern Pabna district, told AFP on Friday. &quot;We have had power cuts before, but this year we cannot get electricity for even two hours at a stretch.&quot; The South Asian nation imports 95% of its oil and gas, much of it from the Middle East, where energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have been disrupted since war began in late February. &quot;We have a huge electricity generation capacity, but due to shortages of gas and fuel, we are unable to utilize it,&quot; senior energy ministry official Umme Rehana told reporters on Thursday. Anindya Islam Amit, the junior power minister, told parliament on Friday that electricity demand was 16,000 megawatts, against generation of 14,126 megawatts. &quot;Limited load-shedding was required,&quot; Amit said. &quot;To maintain fairness, we have decided to introduce limited, experimental load-shedding of 110 megawatts in Dhaka. It is not acceptable that urban residents enjoy comfort while farmers suffer.&quot; Bangladesh has also seen queues lasting several hours at gas stations this week, although Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud has blamed panic buying and insisted the country has enough fuel.

The request was made during a meeting with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright at the Department of Energy in Washington DC on Tuesday.&nbsp; During the talks, the foreign minister underscored Bangladesh&#39;s ongoing energy challenges stemming from global supply chain disruptions, particularly ahead of the critical planting season, and stressed the need to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply for farmers and safeguard food security. Direct waiverRahman explained that Bangladesh could not take advantage of the earlier limited world-wide waiver by US on Russian oil at sea since none of the tankers were bound for Bangladesh at that time. In addition to seeking a direct waiver, the two sides discussed the options to buy more refined oil out of Russian crude from third countries to meet immediate need. US Energy Secretary Wright acknowledged the energy challenges Bangladesh is facing and expressed his country&#39;s commitment to support Bangladesh during these difficult times to help ensure its energy security. &#39;Positively consider&#39; He said the US will &#39;positively consider&#39; the requests of Bangladesh and assured that he and his team would work closely with the relevant departments of the US government to this end. The two sides also discussed longer-term cooperation for sustainable energy solutions for Bangladesh and the prospects of increasing procurement of US energy products. In recent years, the country has imported around six million tons of fuel oil annually, much of which passes through the strategic route. A significant portion of Bangladesh&rsquo;s imported liquefied natural gas from Qatar and Oman also transits through the Strait of Hormuz, making the country particularly vulnerable to disruptions in the waterway. During the meeting, both sides also discussed ways to increase investment, trade, and economic cooperation between Dhaka and Washington. Issues related to strengthening the capacity of various government institutions were also raised.

She refused to attend the trial and denies the charges.&nbsp;In that case, former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also sentenced to death in absentia after being found guilty of crimes against humanity.&nbsp;Ex-police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who was in court and had pleaded guilty, was sentenced to five years&#39; imprisonment.

In a statement issued in Dhaka, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it summoned Myanmar Ambassador U Kyaw Soe Moe over a recent incident of firing from Myanmar toward Bangladesh near the Whykong Union of Teknaf. &ldquo;A 12-year-old Bangladeshi girl was severely injured during the cross-border firing,&rdquo; the ministry said. Bangladesh said the shooting constituted &ldquo;a blatant violation of international law and a hindrance to good neighbourly relationships,&rdquo; and conveyed its protest to the Myanmar envoy, according to the foreign press statement. The ministry said Bangladesh asked Myanmar &ldquo;to take full responsibility and requisite measures to stop such cross-border firings in the future.&rdquo; It also urged that &ldquo;whatever happens between the Myanmar authorities and the armed groups in Myanmar should not in any way affect the lives and livelihoods of the people in Bangladesh,&rdquo; according to the statement. The border areas of Teknaf have previously been affected by spillover violence linked to unrest inside Myanmar, raising concerns over civilian safety on the Bangladeshi side. The statement said the Myanmar ambassador assured Bangladeshi officials that his government would act to prevent similar incidents. &ldquo;The Myanmar ambassador assured that his government would take measures to stop such incidents and expressed their sincere sympathy to the injured and her family,&rdquo; the ministry said.
