ISLAMABAD: The Indian National Congress (INC) on Thursday accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Odisha of presiding over "jungle raj" after a railway police constable was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in the eastern Indian state.

In a post on X, Congress said railway police constable Soumya Ranjan was attacked while riding a motorcycle with a friend before being tied up and beaten by a crowd.

"Their hands and feet were tied, and the goons, disguised as a crowd, beat them until he died," the post said.

Congress said that police personnel present at the scene "just stood there, watching the spectacle" despite the constable pleading for his life.

"This incident is a stain on society, with no place for it in a civilized community," the opposition party said.

"The BJP government has established jungle raj in Odisha as well. The entire system is running according to the whims of goons and criminals,” Congress said, adding that Odisha, "once known for its peace, has now fallen prey to anarchy and violence".

Congress also accused the BJP of promoting a "violent model" for political gain and claimed ordinary citizens were becoming victims of rising unrest.

The party demanded strict action against those responsible for the killing, but alleged there was "little hope" of accountability because "the goons in the guise of a crowd have the support of the BJP government."
