ISLAMABAD: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday extended felicitations to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the people of Russia on the occasion of Victory Day, commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II.

In a message conveyed on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan, President Zardari said victory in the Great Patriotic War remained a "solemn and enduring reminder" of the sacrifices made by the Russian people in "defense of their homeland and in the global struggle against fascism", according to Radio Pakistan.

He said the historic triumph symbolized the "resilience, courage and determination" of the Russian nation and reflected its enduring contribution to international peace, security and stability.

"Pakistan greatly values its relations with the Russian Federation and attaches importance to a shared commitment to a just, peaceful, and rules-based international order," the president said.

Zardari also paid tribute to those who lost their lives in "the fight against Nazism", including soldiers from the Indus Valley region who served as part of the Allied forces during World War II.

The president expressed hope that the spirit of that historic victory would continue to inspire greater cooperation, mutual understanding, and friendship between the two countries, the statement said.
