ISLAMABAD: Argentina's dramatic 3-2 victory over Egypt in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 was overshadowed by two controversial officiating decisions that sparked widespread debate over the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Egypt looked on course to produce one of the tournament's biggest upsets after racing into a two-goal lead before the defending champions mounted a remarkable comeback to level the score.

The first major flashpoint came early in the second half when Egypt thought they had extended their advantage. Mostafa Ziko found the net following a swift counterattack, only for VAR to intervene. After a lengthy review, the goal was ruled out for a foul in the attacking phase of play, leaving Egyptian players and coaching staff visibly frustrated.

The controversy deepened in stoppage time with the score locked at 2-2.

Mohamed Salah broke into the penalty area before going to ground under pressure from an Argentine defender. Egyptian players immediately appealed for a penalty, while many questioned why the incident did not receive an on-field review.

The referee allowed play to continue, and moments later Argentina launched a counterattack that ended with Enzo Fernández heading home the winning goal to complete a dramatic turnaround.

The final whistle triggered emotional scenes as Egyptian players surrounded the referee in protest, while members of the coaching staff also voiced their frustration over the officiating decisions.

The match quickly became one of the tournament's biggest talking points, with former players, referees and football analysts divided over both incidents. Some argued there was sufficient contact on Salah to justify a penalty or, at minimum, a VAR review. Others maintained the referee made the correct decision by allowing play to continue.

The debate quickly spread across social media, where supporters from both nations dissected the incidents frame by frame. Much of the discussion centered on whether Egypt had been denied a legitimate penalty and whether the overturned goal reflected a consistent application of VAR.

Under FIFA's VAR protocol, video officials intervene only in cases of "clear and obvious errors" or "serious missed incidents" involving goals, penalty decisions, direct red cards or mistaken identity.

The controversy ultimately overshadowed what had been one of the tournament's most dramatic knockout matches. Argentina advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-2 victory and will face either Colombia or Switzerland on July 12.

For Egypt, the defeat marked a heartbreaking end to a historic campaign. The Pharaohs reached the knockout stage and progressed beyond the first elimination round for the first time in the nation's World Cup history, making the contentious finish even more painful for the players and their supporters.
