ISLAMABAD: India said on Wednesday that it had successfully test-fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile, the Agni-Prime.

This missile is designed to cover a range of up to 2,000 kilometers and is equipped with various advanced features, India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said in a post on X.

Agni-Prime can move on a rail network, allowing users to have cross-country mobility and launch within a short reaction time, even in reduced visibility, he added.

“The missile’s trajectory was tracked by multiple ground stations throughout the test, and officials confirmed that it was a ‘textbook launch,’ with all mission objectives successfully met,” according to an official statement released by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Government of India.

The statement further notes that this successful trial enables the induction of futuristic rail-based systems into service.

The launch was carried out by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC).

The Agni-Prime is one of several indigenously produced short- and medium-range Indian ballistic missiles aimed at boosting its defense posture against Pakistan, as well as China.

When operational, the missile should be capable of carrying a nuclear warhead to any part of China, according to AFP.
