ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday extended “heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Bangladesh,” and to the family and supporters of Bangladesh’s former PM Begum Khaleda Zia, who passed away late last month.

The country bid farewell last week with a state funeral drawing vast crowds, mourning a towering leader whose career defined politics for decades. Zia, the first woman to serve as prime minister in the South Asian nation of 170 million people, died on December 30, aged 80. Flags were flown at half-mast, and thousands of security officers lined roads as her body was carried through the streets of the capital, Dhaka, by a vehicle in the colors of the national flag.

According to a statement issued by Pakistan's Foreign Office today, FM Dar noted the passing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s chairperson.

“On behalf of the people and government of Pakistan, and on my own behalf, I extend heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Bangladesh, and to her family and supporters,” the foreign minister said.

He said that Begum Zia “devoted her life to public service and to the welfare of her nation, adding that her resilience and leadership during challenging times “left a lasting legacy.”

“She will be remembered with respect by all who value service to country and people,” he added.

The deputy premier said that Pakistan stood with the South Asian country at this difficult moment.

“We share your grief and pray that you find strength and comfort in the memories of her service and the legacy she leaves behind,” he said.
