ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered financial support for people affected by the country’s monsoon flooding, with compensation planned for families of those killed and owners of homes damaged by the rains, the Prime Minister’s Office said Saturday.

In an official statement, the PMO reported that PM Sharif issued the orders at a meeting on the impact of Monsoon 2026. He directed federal and provincial authorities to speed up relief and recovery operations.

The government is also moving to restore damaged roads and electricity transmission systems in affected areas. Federal ministers and secretaries have been told to travel to flood-hit regions, assess the damage and supervise the work.

Relief deliveries were being accelerated in remote areas where difficult access has delayed food and emergency supplies, the statement revealed.

Officials told the meeting that people displaced by flooding had been moved to safer locations. The country’s National Disaster Management Authority and provincial disaster management authorities remained ready for additional rainfall and possible flooding.

Officials said that a total of 615 tons of relief supplies had been sent to areas affected by the rains. Further supplies were being dispatched according to need, according to the statement.

Restoration work was underway in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, according to the briefing.

Authorities were also using an early warning system in the country’s northern areas. Officials said it had helped move many residents to safety before flooding occurred.
