ISLAMABAD: Tarique Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and prime minister-elect, took the oath of office Tuesday during a ceremony at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the parliament complex.

According to the state broadcaster Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), newly elected members of parliament began taking their oaths at 10 am local time, followed by Rahman and his cabinet being sworn in at 4 pm by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

This ceremony ushers in Bangladesh’s first male prime minister in more than three decades.

Leaders from 13 countries received invitations, including China, Pakistan and several Gulf nations.

Pakistan’s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal attended the ceremony, along with Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Sri Lanka’s health minister and Britain’s Indo-Pacific undersecretary.

Rahman’s rise follows the BNP’s landslide victory in the Feb. 12 general election
