Tom Fletcher, addressing the United Nations Security Council, acknowledged the flow of aid has improved since a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on October 10 &mdash; with an average of 100 deliveries entering the Palestinian territory each day. But, he said, &quot;these fragile gains are the bare minimum of what Palestinians need and what we can provide &mdash; and what international law demands.&quot; &quot;We cannot allow the summit of our ambition and our will to be a world where children have sufficient calories to survive and are spared constant bombing, yet remain hungry, bitten by rats, homeless and out of school,&quot; Fletcher added. &quot;It is not enough to silence the weapons &mdash; we must restore dignity.&quot; Fletcher specifically called for the opening of all crossing points into Gaza and the immediate lifting of Israeli restrictions on the entry of goods such as medical equipment and fuel. Bushra Khalidi, a humanitarian officer with the NGO Oxfam invited to address the Security Council, called on member states to act with &quot;urgency, with courage, with humanity.&quot;

GAZA CITY: Israeli air strikes killed 22 people in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, including women and children, according to the territory&#39;s civil defense agency, updating an earlier toll. Despite a US-brokered ceasefire entering its second phase earlier this month, violence in the Palestinian territory has continued, with both Israel and Hamas accusing each other of violating the truce agreement. The latest violence comes as Israel announced it would reopen the crucial Rafa crossing between Gaza and Egypt on Sunday, a key demand by humanitarian organisations. &quot;The death toll in the Gaza Strip from Israeli air strikes since dawn on Saturday has risen to 22, most of them women and children, with others still trapped under the rubble,&quot; the civil defence agency, a rescue force operating under the Hamas authority, said in a statement. &quot;Residential apartments, tents, shelters and a police station were targeted, resulting in this humanitarian catastrophe,&quot; agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal said in the statement. The war in Gaza was sparked by Hamas&#39;s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,221 people, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. The Israeli retaliation flattened much of Gaza, which was already suffering from previous rounds of fighting and from an Israeli blockade imposed since 2007. The two-year war has left at least 71,769 people dead in Gaza, according to the health ministry, whose figures are considered reliable by the United Nations.
