ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has once again urged the international community to end the decades-old economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed on Cuba, arguing that lifting it would ease the country's humanitarian difficulties and restore its people's right to development and prosperity.

The appeal came on July 7, 2026, as Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, addressed the reopened session of the UN General Assembly debate on ending the embargo against Cuba.

In his remarks, Ambassador Asim voiced Islamabad's concern over the toll the embargo has taken on Cuba and its population, raising the issue as part of a broader defense of multilateralism and international cooperation.

He argued that unilateral economic measures, especially when directed selectively at developing nations, undermine the very order the international system is meant to uphold.

The envoy reaffirmed Pakistan's long-standing commitment to the founding principles of the UN Charter, pointing to sovereign equality and mutual respect among states as the bedrock of the global order.

He also stressed respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of all nations, calling for disputes to be resolved peacefully in line with Chapter VI of the UN Charter, while encouraging continued dialogue and diplomacy.

Pakistan's statement adds to a long history of General Assembly votes in which an overwhelming majority of member states have called for the embargo's removal, reflecting Islamabad's consistent position on the issue over the years.
