ISLAMABAD: Pakistan TV Digital, a project of Pakistan Television Network, on Sunday released Four Nights: When Pakistan Roared, a documentary chronicling untold stories, eyewitness accounts and behind-the-scenes moments from the four-day military confrontation between Pakistan and India in May 2025. Released on the first anniversary of Marka-e-Haq, the documentary reconstructs the dramatic events that unfolded between May 6 and May 10 last year, when tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours escalated into one of the most serious military confrontations in recent years. The film traces the chain of events from the April 22, 2025 attack in Pahalgam, in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, which left more than two dozen tourists dead and sharply escalated tensions, to India&rsquo;s subsequent strikes inside Pakistan and Islamabad&rsquo;s military response under Operation Bunyan Um Marsoos. Blending frontline accounts, journalist testimonies, military analysis and archival footage, the documentary offers a detailed reconstruction of the conflict, capturing both its strategic dimensions and its human cost. Featuring journalists, defense analysts, diplomats and eyewitnesses, the film revisits the fear, uncertainty and intensity of four nights that pushed South Asia to the brink of a wider conflict. &ldquo;I exactly remember that moment. I cannot forget that moment for the rest of my life,&rdquo; senior television anchor Waseem Badami says in the documentary, recalling the first strikes and the shock that followed. Journalist Meher Bokhari describes the emotional toll of the initial attacks. &ldquo;Innocent civilians being targeted. Children being hit. So, one was aghast,&rdquo; she says. The documentary captures how Pakistan&rsquo;s media, military and civilian institutions responded in real time as the crisis unfolded, including round-the-clock news coverage and efforts to counter competing narratives. Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar recalls the pressure of the moment. &ldquo;We were awake for almost 72 hours. We hadn&rsquo;t slept and we were on the go trying to give our point of view and also to combat and counter false narratives,&rdquo; Tarar says in the film. Journalist Muneeb Farooq reflects on the uncertainty that dominated those early hours. &ldquo;You&rsquo;re Pakistani at the end of the day. You feel alarmed, but there&rsquo;s also anger inside you,&rdquo; he says. The documentary identifies the aerial battle as the turning point in the conflict, when Pakistan says it downed multiple Indian fighter aircraft, including Rafale jets, significantly shifting the strategic momentum. Veteran journalist Talat Hussain recalls the military&rsquo;s posture at the time. &ldquo;For one missile, there will be ten coming from our side,&rdquo; Hussain says, recounting the message conveyed during military briefings. Badami describes the moment confirmation came that Indian aircraft had been brought down. &ldquo;Goosebumps. Oh my God. And you cannot break it right now,&rdquo; he recalls. &ldquo;And then that moment came when I was told: &lsquo;Okay, break it. Tell the world that Pakistan has done it.&rsquo;&rdquo; Beyond the battlefield, the documentary examines the parallel information war that unfolded during the conflict, highlighting competing narratives, media coverage and digital disinformation. Former US ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter, who appears in the documentary, says Pakistan&rsquo;s strategic communications during the crisis appeared more coherent. &ldquo;I was impressed, I&rsquo;d have to say, that the PR element of the war, the Pakistanis did a much better job,&rdquo; Munter says in an interview recorded from Prague. The film also captures the national mood as reports emerged of Pakistan&rsquo;s claimed aerial successes. &ldquo;The feeling itself was fantastic,&rdquo; Tarar says. &ldquo;It was beyond words.&rdquo; The documentary revisits the evolution of the conflict, from India&rsquo;s initial strikes to drone incursions, missile exchanges and the eventual ceasefire that brought an end to four days of fighting. It also examines how the confrontation reshaped regional perceptions of military capability, deterrence and strategic balance. Defence analyst Ali Hamza describes the aerial engagement as a defining moment in modern warfare. &ldquo;It was a system fighting another system. It was one of the episodes of modern air combat,&rdquo; he says. Beyond strategy and statecraft, the documentary highlights the human cost of war, including civilian casualties, displacement and fear among border communities. A civilian witness from Azad Jammu and Kashmir recalls the moment explosions shook homes in the dead of night. &ldquo;The whole house shook. Everyone was scared. Then we took the kids and left,&rdquo; the witness says. Speaking at the documentary&rsquo;s launch at PTV Headquarters in Islamabad, Pakistan TV Digital Editor-in-Chief Saqib Tanveer said the project aimed to preserve firsthand accounts of a conflict that left a lasting mark on the region. &ldquo;The documentary aims to provide a historical record of the crisis through the voices of those who witnessed it firsthand,&rdquo; Tanveer said. &ldquo;From newsrooms and diplomatic circles to affected communities and strategic observers, these voices help document history as it was lived.&rdquo; The release coincides with nationwide commemorations marking the first anniversary of Marka-e-Haq, with official ceremonies held across Pakistan and at diplomatic missions abroad to honour the armed forces and those who lost their lives during the conflict. For viewers, Four Nights: When Pakistan Roared offers both a reconstruction of a critical moment in South Asia&rsquo;s recent history and a deeply personal account of how war is experienced, reported and remembered. The documentary premiered on Pakistan TV Digital&rsquo;s official digital platforms at 4pm on May 10.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday rejected India&rsquo;s &ldquo;weaponization&rdquo; of false narratives for domestic political purposes, urging New Delhi to act responsibly amid heightened regional tensions. The statement from the Foreign Office comes at a sensitive time for global security, with South Asia tensions persisting months after the May 2025 India-Pakistan conflict and the world already grappling with instability in the Middle East, raising broader concerns about escalation. In its statement, the Foreign Office said it was &ldquo;deplorable&rdquo; that India had resorted to &ldquo;baseless allegations&rdquo; linking Pakistan to the Pahalgam incident, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at regional and international peace. &ldquo;It is unfortunate that, in the midst of an ongoing regional crisis, India remains focused on weaponizing its false narrative against Pakistan for narrow domestic political gains,&rdquo; the statement said. The response followed remarks by Indian officials marking the anniversary of the Pahalgam attack, in which 26 people were killed on April 22 last year when gunmen opened fire on tourists in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. At the time, Pakistan had expressed condolences to the victims&rsquo; families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. The Foreign Office said the latest allegations were part of a recurring pattern, accusing India of creating a &ldquo;smokescreen&rdquo; to deflect attention. &ldquo;Such allegations constitute yet another chapter from India&rsquo;s playbook of creating a smokescreen for its continued sponsorship of terrorism across the region,&rdquo; the statement issued on Thursday said, referring to what it called India&rsquo;s &ldquo;misplaced adventurism&rdquo; and Pakistan&rsquo;s response through Operation &ldquo;Bunyan-um-Marsoos.&rdquo;&nbsp; It added that such &ldquo;propaganda campaigns&rdquo; could not divert international attention from New Delhi&rsquo;s continued occupation of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and denial of the right to self-determination to Kashmiris, &ldquo;in violation of relevant UN resolutions.&rdquo; The statement further accused India of undermining regional stability through &ldquo;inflammatory rhetoric, repeated provocations, and aggressive military posturing,&rdquo; and criticized New Delhi&rsquo;s unilateral move to hold the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, terming it a violation of international law. Pakistan called on the international community to take note. &ldquo;We hope that the international community will call on India to demonstrate responsible behaviour and to refrain from all rhetoric and actions that may serve as a spoiler to ongoing efforts aimed at regional and international peace and security,&rdquo; the Foreign Office said. ISLAMABAD: In a communication,&nbsp;UN experts have said that India violated the prohibition on the use of force under the UN Charter&nbsp;by taking military action inside Pakistan in May, and sought a response regarding India&#39;s potential human rights violations and its unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. UN Special Rapporteurs and an independent expert, under the Human Rights Council&#39;s mandate, in a Special Procedures communication dated Oct. 16 but released recently, had sought the Indian government&rsquo;s response within 60 days. No such response has been made public so far. &nbsp; Pakistan&rsquo;s call for independent investigationIn their communication, the UN officials strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack and emphasized that those responsible must be brought to justice in accordance with the law.&nbsp; They highlighted that Pakistan had denied any involvement in the incident and consistently called for an independent, transparent, and impartial investigation. They stated that&nbsp;on May 7, India used force within Pakistan&rsquo;s territory under Operation Sindoor and that &ldquo;India did not ... notify the Security Council that its operation was in the exercise of the right of self-defense under article 51 of the United Nations Charter, under the procedures required by that article.&rdquo; In the communication, the experts stated: &quot;We are equally concerned that India did not notify the Security Council of any claim of self-defense under Article 51 of the Charter.&rdquo; Lack of credible evidence&nbsp;They further stated: &ldquo;We are concerned that India has not disclosed credible evidence that the militants who committed the Pahalgam attack were sent to attack India by the Government of Pakistan.&rdquo; They highlighted in the communication that, &ldquo;According to Pakistan, civilian areas were struck, including mosques, and a number of civilians were killed and injured.&rdquo; They added: &ldquo;We are concerned that India&rsquo;s response &hellip; appears to have violated the rights to life and security of person, as a result of the unlawful use of force on Pakistan&rsquo;s territory.&rdquo; The experts stated that, &ldquo;As such, it appears that India has violated the prohibition on the use of force under article 2(4) of the Charter&hellip;&rdquo; &ldquo;The unlawful use of force would consequently constitute a violation of the right to life under article 6 of the ICCPR [International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights],&rdquo; they added. The experts stated: &ldquo;There is no separate right to unilaterally use military force in foreign territory in order to counter terrorism.&rdquo; The communication highlights that &ldquo;&hellip;India may itself have committed an armed attack on Pakistan, entitling Pakistan to exercise self-defense under article 51 of the Charter&hellip;&rdquo; &ldquo;The illegal use of force on foreign territory would also constitute a violation of the foreign State&rsquo;s sovereignty and the duty of non-intervention in a foreign State,&rdquo; it says. On the Indus Waters TreatyOn the issue of the Indus Waters Treaty and arbitration, the communication states: &ldquo;India challenged the Court&rsquo;s jurisdiction &hellip; and has refused to participate in the proceedings.&rdquo; The communication states, &ldquo;We are deeply concerned that any disruption of the flow of water to Pakistan &hellip; could severely affect the human rights of millions of people in Pakistan&hellip;&rdquo; The experts ask the Indian government to respond to several questions.&nbsp; They request India to provide additional information on the allegations and clarify whether it will offer reparations and an apology for violations of the right to life from unlawful use of force in Pakistan.&nbsp; It also asks India to explain its commitment to fulfilling obligations under the Indus Waters Treaty without interfering with Pakistan&#39;s rights and the human rights of affected populations.&nbsp; The text seeks clarification on measures to prevent harm to rights related to water, environment, food, and development resulting from Treaty disruptions.&nbsp; It also inquires whether India will peacefully settle Treaty disputes through proper provisions and pursue the peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir territorial dispute in accordance with international law and the right of self-determination.&nbsp;The UN experts added: &ldquo;This communication and any response received from your Excellency&rsquo;s Government will be made public via the communications reporting website within 60 days. They will also subsequently be made available in the usual report to be presented to the Human Rights Council.&rdquo;

UN demands India explain use of force on Pakistan, Indus Treaty suspension

ISLAMABAD: United Nations experts on Monday slammed New Delhi for sweeping counter-terrorism operations in Indian-occupied Kashmir, saying that measures taken after the April 22 Pahalgam attack have led to mass detentions, abuses, and unconstitutional punitive actions. According to a statement issued by the UN Human Rights Office, Indian authorities launched &ldquo;sweeping operations across the occupied territory&rdquo; after the Pahalgam attack, in which 26 people were killed. The response resulted in &ldquo;the arrest and detention of around 2,800 individuals, including journalists and human rights defenders.&rdquo; The UN said many detainees were &ldquo;detained and charged under the Public Safety Act or the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, which permit prolonged detention without charge or trial and contain vague and overbroad definitions of terrorism.&rdquo; &ldquo;Some detainees were allegedly tortured, held incommunicado, and denied access to lawyers and family members,&rdquo; the statement added. Eight UN experts, Ben Saul, Morris Tidball-Binz, Nazila Ghanea, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, Nicolas Levrat, Paula Gaviria, Irene Khan, and Mary Lawlor, condemned the Pahalgam attack but stressed that counter-terror actions must remain lawful. &ldquo;We unequivocally condemn the brutal terrorist attack on a tourist area &hellip; However, all governments must respect international human rights law while combating terrorism,&rdquo; they said. The experts flagged &ldquo;reports of punitive house demolitions and forced evictions and arbitrary displacement,&rdquo; saying families of individuals perceived as militant supporters were targeted &ldquo;without court orders or due process.&rdquo; They called the measures &ldquo;collective punishment,&rdquo; which defied a 2024 Indian Supreme Court ruling declaring such demolitions unconstitutional. They further expressed concern over &ldquo;communication blackouts and restrictions on press freedom,&rdquo; noting that authorities suspended mobile internet services and &ldquo;blocked around 8,000 social media accounts, including those of journalists and independent media outlets.&rdquo; These actions were described as &ldquo;disproportionate restrictions on freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly.&rdquo; The UN&rsquo;s warning comes months after India and Pakistan fought a four-day war in May, triggered by the Pahalgam attack on civilians in the highly-guarded occupied valley, an incident New Delhi blamed on Islamabad and Pakistan firmly rejected. The fighting quickly escalated into the deadliest cross-border clashes since 2019, involving missile, drone, and artillery strikes before both sides accepted a US-brokered ceasefire. Targeting Kashmiris beyond the regionAccording to the statement, experts also found that &ldquo;Kashmiri students were subject to surveillance and harassment, following government directives requiring universities to collect their personal data.&rdquo; They reported heightened &ldquo;hate speech and incitement to violence against Muslims, inflamed by political figures in the ruling party,&rdquo; as well as demolitions in Gujarat and Assam &ldquo;where thousands of Muslim homes, mosques, and businesses were destroyed.&rdquo; The experts said nearly &ldquo;1,900 Muslims and Rohingya refugees were also expelled to Bangladesh and Myanmar, often without due process,&rdquo; calling the expulsions a breach of the international obligation of non-refoulement. They also highlighted ongoing abuses in the occupied territory, pointing to human rights defenders including Irfan Mehraj and Khurram Parvez, who remain detained &ldquo;under draconian security laws.&rdquo; Calling for the &ldquo;immediate unconditional release of all individuals arbitrarily detained,&rdquo; the experts urged India to overhaul its counter-terrorism laws. &ldquo;Excessive counter-terrorism measures not only violate human dignity, the Indian Constitution and international law, but counter-productively fuel social division and grievances that can spiral into further violence,&rdquo; they warned. The UN body also called on India and Pakistan to &ldquo;peacefully resolve the long-running conflict&rdquo; over Kashmir to end what it described as a &ldquo;destructive cycle of cross-border violence.&rdquo;

ISLAMABAD: After declaring in May that any future terror attack in India would be considered &ldquo;an act of war&rdquo;, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left India constrained in responding to the recent Delhi blast, facing domestic and diplomatic pressures that analysts say reflect a trap of its own making, according to a report published by Al Jazeera. On Nov. 10, a car blast in India&rsquo;s capital resulted in 13 deaths and several injuries. The Indian prime minister&rsquo;s rhetoric, the report says, &ldquo;limits how easily India can blame alleged perpetrators without raising expectations of a conflict with Pakistan.&rdquo; India was swift to blame Islamabad for the April&nbsp;Pahalgam incident, an attack on tourists which left 26 dead; Pakistan denied any involvement.&nbsp; In May, the two countries were involved in an armed conflict that lasted four days before a ceasefire was reached. &lsquo;Trap of one&rsquo;s own creation&rsquo;&nbsp;The report highlights that &ldquo;Modi&rsquo;s comments drew a new red line and a low threshold for future military action against Pakistan.&rdquo; While the Indian cabinet has termed the Delhi blast &quot;a terror incident,&quot; the government has so far avoided accusing any country of the incident. This is in contrast to the knee-jerk blame directed at Pakistan in the case of the Pahalgam incident in May. According to the Al Jazeera report, &ldquo;The low bar that Modi set for military action against Pakistan in the event of future attacks by armed groups means that naming Islamabad as responsible will automatically stir domestic expectations of an Indian military strike against its neighbor.&rdquo; On Modi&rsquo;s rhetoric about &ldquo;act of war,&rdquo; the article quotes Ajai Sahni, executive director of the South Asia Terrorism Portal, as saying, &ldquo;The Indian government painted itself into a corner &ndash; a trap of one&rsquo;s own creation.&rdquo; &lsquo;Foolish position&rsquo;&ldquo;With the declaration that an act of terror is an act of war and no elaboration on this doctrine, now they are confronting the consequences of what they say &ndash; a completely foolish position, not even a policy, that is short-sighted for political gains,&rdquo; Sahni is quoted as saying. Quoting analyst Michael Kugelman, the report says, &ldquo;If the government comes out and declares this to be a terrorist attack, there would be significant pressure, both strategic and political, for India to do something big, to do something kinetic.&rdquo; Speaking about the role of Indian agencies, Sheikh Showkat, a political analyst, is quoted as saying in the article, &ldquo;Blaming Pakistan has also been a way to shed one&rsquo;s own accountability.&rdquo; &ldquo;Whatever investigators find, India will be hampered in shaping its diplomatic and security response by its reaction&rdquo; to the incident in April, the report quotes analysts as saying.

The rhetoric limits responses to terror attacks, creating a self-imposed trap; analysts say it raises domestic pressure for retaliation, constrains diplomatic flexibility, and complicates India’s handling of incidents such as the Delhi blast.
