For a man who spent years warning that artificial intelligence could end the human story, Nick Bostrom is surprisingly hopeful about the years ahead.


The Oxford philosopher, whose 2014 book Superintelligence helped force the world to take machine intelligence seriously, believes we are now living through the very moment he once described largely in theory.


In a conversation with Pakistan TV Digital’s Think Talk, Bostrom laid out both the promise and peril of what is coming, in terms that were less about killer robots than about a stranger question: What will human beings be for when machines can do everything better than them?


Bostrom argues that AI has already taken us into new territory. When he was writing Superintelligence, he recalled, people “ignored AI or sort of dismissed it as science fiction.” Now, machines that can talk, reason, and code are part of daily life.


He points to a striking run of recent breakthroughs, including AI systems that have begun tackling mathematical problems that stumped humans for generations. Keeping up with developments in the field, he joked, has become “a full-time job.”


So how far away is superintelligence, the point at which machines surpass humans across the board?


Bostrom is careful, but his caution cuts both ways.


“We can no longer confidently exclude even very short timelines,” he said. It might take five years, or 10. But it might also arrive far sooner if a researcher stumbles on the missing idea that unlocks it.


The problem of paradise


Where the conversation becomes genuinely unsettling is not doom, but its opposite.


In his more recent book, Deep Utopia, Bostrom asks what happens if everything goes right, if AI solves humanity’s problems, automates the economy and frees people from the need to work at all.


His answer begins with a small, vivid example.


Today, if you want to be fit, you have to exercise. But imagine, he said, a future pill “that would induce exactly the same effects in your body as spending an hour on the treadmill.”


Multiply that across every effortful thing humans do, and much of what fills our days simply becomes unnecessary.


The prospect sounds liberating. But Bostrom argues it could force “a fairly fundamental rethink about how we structure our lives, what we base our sense of self-worth on.”


He imagines a world where people are no longer “forced to sell half of their adult waking hours just to earn an income,” leaving them free to pursue art, play, spirituality and social interaction.


But he warns of a hollowness at its center.


We would be, he said, “almost like the children in Disneyland.” The challenge would be learning how to live well and find meaning when survival no longer demands our effort.


What machines cannot do for us?


If AI can also produce better art than any human, what is left for the artist?


Here Bostrom was reassuring.


People will keep creating, he suggested, because the doing is the point — what philosophers call “autotelic” activities, valuable in themselves rather than simply for their results.


His most touching illustration was a child’s drawing.


A parent treasures a crayon scribble made by their own child, Bostrom noted, even though “there are many nicer drawings that you could get by artists” for free.


Why?


“The fact that your child put in the effort makes it so that this drawing now actually means more to you.”


Some things, he argues, lose part of their value the moment a machine does them for us. Effort, tradition and care cannot simply be outsourced.


The risk is not Russian roulette


None of this means Bostrom has stopped worrying.


Building superintelligence, he insists, carries real and potentially existential risks. But he offered a provocative way to think about them.


It is not, he said, like Russian roulette, where the best outcome is that nothing happens.


It is more like risky heart surgery.


Yes, there is danger on the operating table. But the alternative, the path humanity is already on, ends the same way for all of us, through disease and aging. If AI succeeds, it might cure what would otherwise kill us.


That is why Bostrom made a claim that may surprise many.


If we want to extend the lives of people alive today, “we probably should hope that AI timelines are relatively short.”


The argument captures the paradox at the heart of Bostrom’s thinking: the technology that could pose the greatest risk to humanity may also offer humanity its greatest chance to escape the limits that have always defined it.
