U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday said that the parties involved in the negotiations to mediate the war in Gaza were going to have a deal “very soon.”
In March, the U.S. president broke a longstanding diplomatic taboo by holding secret talks with Hamas to secure the release of American hostages held in Gaza.
'It’s a problem we’re going to get done’
While speaking to reporters on Air Force One as he traveled back to Washington from New York, he said, “I think we're going to have a deal on Gaza very soon.”
The president said that it was “a hell of a problem” and was one for everybody. “But it’s a problem we’re going to get done.”
He did not elaborate on the solution but said, “Everyone wants this war to end!”
“The Israelis have accepted my Terms. It is time for Hamas to accept as well,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social, warning Hamas about the consequences of not accepting.
“This is my last warning, there will not be another one!” Trump added.
Hamas response
In response to comments from the U.S. president, Palestinian fighter group Hamas said they were ready to "immediately sit at the negotiating table." In a statement, quoted by AFP, the fighter group said that “some ideas from the American side aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement.”
According to Reuters, an Israeli official said Israel was "seriously considering" Trump's proposal. However, he did not provide details of the deal.
Over 64,000 people have died since Israel’s military onslaught on Gaza in October 2023. More than 162,000 people have been wounded.
