ISLAMABAD: WhatsApp will stop supporting older Android and iPhone devices as the messaging platform updates its minimum operating system requirements.
The company said it will no longer support Android devices running versions older than Android 5.0 and iPhones running versions older than iOS 15.1, according to its updated device-support guidance.
The changes are part of WhatsApp's regular review of the operating systems and devices that can run its service. The company said it periodically drops support for older software because such devices may have fewer users, lack the latest security updates or no longer provide the functionality required to support newer versions of WhatsApp.
WhatsApp users whose devices are running an unsupported operating system will be notified through the app before support ends and will receive reminders to upgrade.
The company also said users setting up a new WhatsApp account must have a phone that can receive SMS messages or calls during the verification process. Wi-fi-only devices are not supported for setting up new accounts.
WhatsApp currently supports Android 5.0 and newer and iOS 15.1 and newer. However, the company has announced further increases to its minimum requirements, with Android 6.0 becoming the minimum supported version from Sept 8, 2026, and iOS 15.5 becoming the minimum from Nov 30, 2026.
Users affected by the changes will need to update their phone's operating system, if an update is available, or move to a newer compatible device to continue using WhatsApp.
