We live in a strange age. Never before have children had access to so much information, and never before has it been so necessary to ask whether information alone makes them knowledgeable.
A child can ask an AI tool to explain photosynthesis, solve an equation, write an essay, translate a language or produce a computer program within seconds. The machine answers quickly, confidently and often impressively. This creates a dangerous illusion: if the answer is always available, why learn the answer at all?
As an educationist, I believe this is precisely the wrong question.
The purpose of education has never been merely to store information. It has always been building capable minds, worthy of understanding information, questioning it, and applying it intelligently. In the age of artificial intelligence, knowledge has not become less important. It has become more important because our children must now judge the answers produced by machines.
There is a fundamental difference between information, knowledge and skill. Information tells us something. Knowledge allows us to understand it. Skill enables us to act upon that understanding.
Consider a surgeon. AI may analyze thousands of medical records and suggest a possible diagnosis. It may even assist during an operation. But when something unexpected happens, we would hardly want the surgeon to say, “I do not know what this means, but the computer does.” The surgeon’s skill rests upon years of accumulated knowledge, anatomy, physiology, pathology and countless hours of practice. Technology can assist judgment; it cannot replace the need to possess judgment.
The same is true of a pilot. Modern aircraft are highly automated. Yet we continue to train pilots extensively because automation works best when circumstances are predictable. When they are not, knowledge and skill become inseparable. The person in control must understand the principles behind the machine, not merely know which button to press.
This distinction matters enormously for schools.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates that 39% of workers’ existing skill sets will be transformed or become outdated by 2030. It also reports that analytical thinking remains the most sought-after core skill among employers, while AI and big data, creative thinking, resilience, flexibility and lifelong learning are increasing in importance.
This might tempt schools to abandon knowledge-heavy curricula and concentrate entirely on “skills”. That would be another mistake.
You cannot think critically about something you know nothing about.
A student cannot critically evaluate an argument about climate change without some scientific knowledge. A child cannot identify historical misinformation without knowing history. An engineer cannot creatively redesign a bridge without understanding mathematics and physics. Creativity does not emerge from an empty mind; it works with what the mind already knows.
The debate should not be knowledge versus skills.
Our children need both.
Schools must continue teaching mathematics, science, literature, history, languages and the arts, but we must change what children are asked to do with that knowledge. They must question, investigate, debate, design, collaborate, communicate and solve unfamiliar problems. Assessment should increasingly ask students to apply what they know rather than merely reproduce what they remember.
And teachers must evolve too. In a classroom where information is abundant, the teacher’s greatest value is no longer simply delivering information. It is teaching children how to distinguish fact from noise, evidence from assertion and knowledge from confident nonsense.
AI can give our children answers.
Education must give them something far more valuable: the knowledge to judge those answers, the skills to use them and the wisdom to know when not to trust them.
That is not an old-fashioned purpose for education. It may be its most important purpose yet.
